International Relations Unit

The International Relations Unit handles relations for the Registry with international organizations in order to compare experiences with other ccTLDs and to develop best practices. The Registry participates actively to the meetings of the most important international organizations to ensure that the organization is authoritative and to foster international harmonization.

The Unit also supplies technical advice and guidance in matters related to .it, at the request of the italian government bodies responsible for the Internet, for the formulation of shared positions at the national and international level.

The main organizations to which the Registry participates are: ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers); RIPE (Réseaux IP Européennes); CENTR (Council of European National Top Level Domain Registries), IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), ROW (Registration Operations Workshop).

  • ICANN is responsible for assigning IP addresses and for managing the system of first level domain names (Top-Level Domain), generic domain names (gTLD), geographic (ccTLD) and root server systems.
  • ccNSO (country code Names Supporting Organization) is one of the three Supporting Organizations within ICANN. Created in 2003 for and by ccTLD managers, the ccNSO develops and recommends global policies to the ICANN Board, provides a global platform to discuss topics and issues of concern, build consensus and technical cooperation, and facilitate the development of voluntary best practices for ccTLD managers. Membership in the ccNSO is open to all ccTLD managers responsible for managing an ISO 3166-1 ccTLD.
  • CENTR is the non profit organization of European ccTLDs. It provides a forum for discussion on the policies of the ccTLD Registries and acts as a channel of communication with local governors of the Internet and organizations involved with the Internet itself.
  • RIPE NCC is one of five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) providing Internet resource allocations, registration services and coordination activities that support the operation of the Internet globally.

Technologist and technicians experts in the field of domain names participate to the various international working groups and meetings according to their specific expertize.

The International Relations Unit represents the framework in which all international activities concerning the Registry  and the structure of the Domain Name System are planned, implemented and supported. The Unit and its activities is a reference for all Registrars.
